Getting Started
How Do I Connect A Site?
Install and activate the TroubleFree plugin on the site, then open Settings > TroubleFree in wp-admin and copy the access token. Paste it with the site's address on the Add Site page. On a multisite network, network-activate the plugin and add the main site.
It Says My Site Is Connected To Another Account
A site can only be in one account. If it's yours, open Settings > TroubleFree in wp-admin, click "Regenerate Access Token", and add the site again with the new token. Only a WordPress admin can do that, so the site moves to your account, and the previous account loses access.
How Do I Group My Sites?
Give each site a label, like the agency or client it belongs to, on its Site Settings page. The Site menu at the top then groups your sites under their labels. Labels are personal: people you share a site with can file it under their own.
Why Are Times Shown In My Time Zone?
Every date and time is shown in your own time zone, which we pick up from your browser the first time you sign in. Change it under Account Settings.
What Does Offline Mode Mean?
We couldn't connect to your site the last time we checked, so we're showing the last data we captured. Check that the site loads, that the TroubleFree plugin is still active, and that its access token hasn't been regenerated. Pages refresh automatically once the site answers again.
Updates
What Happens If An Update Breaks My Site?
Before each plugin or theme update, your site keeps a copy of the current version. After the update we load the homepage, wp-admin and the pages listed in Site Settings. If any of them shows a PHP error or a server error, the old version is put back automatically.
If an update crashes the site so badly that the TroubleFree plugin stops answering, the optional Rescue Helper can still put the old version back. Install it from Settings > TroubleFree in the site's wp-admin; it adds one small file to wp-content/mu-plugins.
Why Is A Plugin Or Theme Stuck Updating?
An update counts as stuck when the site hasn't reported back within 15 minutes, usually because the site was slow, timed out, or crashed partway through. After 15 minutes we mark it as failed automatically.
The Clear button next to a stuck update only resets it in TroubleFree WP so you can try again. It doesn't change anything on your site, so check the site first, and the Activity page for what happened.
Why Won't WordPress Itself Update?
WordPress updates always take a full backup first, so they need a supported backup plugin that we can start, such as UpdraftPlus, WPvivid, BackWPup, Duplicator or All-in-One WP Migration. The Backups page shows which one the site uses.
Can I Undo An Update?
With paid features on, open the update on the Activity page and click Undo Update within 7 days; we put the previous version back from the copy taken before the update. Without paid features you can still reinstall the older version yourself in wp-admin.
Backups And Security
Which Backup Plugins Work With TroubleFree WP?
UpdraftPlus, WPvivid Backup, BackWPup, Duplicator, All-in-One WP Migration and Jetpack VaultPress Backup (paid plan). BlogVault is recognised, but its backups live on BlogVault's servers, so we can't start or list them. If a site has more than one, choose which one we use on the Backups page.
Where Does The Vulnerability Data Come From?
From Wordfence Intelligence, checked against the exact versions installed on each site several times a day. The Security page shows what's affected and whether an update fixes it.
How Does "Log Into Site" Work?
It creates a single-use login link for a WordPress administrator you choose. The link works once and expires after 2 minutes, so it's safe even if someone sees it later.
Sharing And Sites
Can I Update All My Sites At Once?
Yes. On the Dashboard, Update Everything runs every waiting plugin and theme update on every site, or tick some sites and use Update Selected. Each update is backed up, checked and rolled back if it breaks the site. With paid features, Scheduled Updates in Site Settings can do it automatically every day or week at a quiet time.
How Do I Check The Sites After A Round Of Updates?
Update Everything, Update Selected and Scheduled Updates each start a maintenance run, listed under Updates > Maintenance Runs. With paid features, a run sorts its sites into those that need a look (a failed or rolled back update, a failed page check, or a big visual change) and those that look good, and you mark them reviewed as you go.
Can I Email Clients What Was Updated?
Yes, for sites with paid features. Add the client's email addresses in a site's Site Settings, then after a run choose Client Report on that site to preview the email, add a note and send it. Nothing is sent automatically. Set your agency name, logo and reply-to address in Client Reports. Reports sent through TroubleFree WP come with 25 emails a month for each paid site, shared across your sites; connect your own email server there to send from your own address with no limit.
How Do I Put A Site In Maintenance Mode?
In Site Settings, Maintenance Mode shows visitors a "back soon" page with your own heading and message. Anyone signed in to WordPress still sees the site, and update checks still see the real pages. Turn it off from the same place.
Can I Hide TroubleFree WP From My Clients?
Yes, for sites with paid features. White Label in Site Settings shows the plugin in wp-admin under your agency's name and description, or hides it from the Plugins list and the Settings menu. Tick "Use This On All My Sites With Paid Features" to apply it everywhere at once.
Can I Install Or Remove A Plugin On Many Sites At Once?
Yes. In Bulk Plugin Actions, choose Install (from wordpress.org), Activate, Deactivate or Delete, pick the plugin and the sites, and each site is done in the background. Activating checks each site afterwards and switches the plugin back off if it broke anything.
Can Client Reports Go Out Automatically?
Reports after a round of updates are always previewed and sent by you. You can also switch on a monthly summary for a site in Site Settings: on the 1st it emails the site's report recipients last month's updates, uptime and security fixes.
How Do I Turn On Two-Factor Sign-In?
In Account Settings, choose Set Up Two-Factor Sign-In, scan the QR code with an authenticator app and enter the code it shows. Save the ten recovery codes somewhere safe: each signs you in once without your phone.
Can I See And Vote On Other People's Ideas?
Yes, once you have a site connected. Feature Request shows the ideas we've added to the board, most votes first, and you can vote for the ones you'd use. Names are never shown.
How Do I Remove A Site, Or Leave One Shared With Me?
At the bottom of Site Settings, the owner can remove the site and anyone else can leave it. Removing disconnects it for everyone and deletes its history here; the plugin stays on the site, so you can add it again later.
Billing
What Do Paid Features Add, And How Is Billing Worked Out?
Paid features add one-click undo, before and after screenshots, automatic undo on big visual changes, hourly checks, a year of activity history, alert emails for new vulnerabilities, failed updates and sites going offline, scheduled updates, a review board for each maintenance run, branded client reports and white label. You switch them on per site and only pay for those sites; the price per site drops as you add more. See Subscription for prices.
How Does The Free Trial Work?
Every account can try paid features free on one site for 14 days, no card needed. It starts when you add your first site, or from Subscription. We email you a few days before it ends; subscribe and pick the site to keep them on.
Which Emails Will I Get?
For sites with paid features, everyone with access is emailed when an update fails or is rolled back, when the site goes down (its homepage is checked every 5 minutes, and again a few minutes later before we email) and when it comes back, and when a new vulnerability is found. Each person chooses which of these they get under Account Settings.
Why Is A Setting Marked "Paid Feature"?
Some settings, like the visual change check and alert emails, only work with paid features on. While they're off, those settings are locked and kept as they were, so switching paid features on picks up where you left off.
How Do I Cancel Or Change My Billing?
On the Subscription page, click Manage Billing to update your card, download invoices, switch between monthly and yearly, or cancel. Switching off paid features for a site takes it off your next bill.
